Nurlan Kamitov was the first in Kazakhstan to become an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The development of Kazakhstani architecture is part of the country's recent history, a rapid but challenging path, thanks to competition from domestic and foreign companies. Only the most persistent firms can achieve recognition and a recognizable style. One such firm is INK Architects, founded in 2004.
The company's portfolio includes residential and commercial construction projects, public interior design, and, most notably, the construction of the Hilton Astana, covering over 50,000 square meters within the EXPO Astana site. The architect's style is recognizable – in Astana, the company designed the Expo Boulevard, Ray Residence, Crocus City, and Central Park residential complexes, as well as Art Residence and Gagarin Park in Almaty. Its founder, Nurlan Kamitov, says the key factors in the company's success are speed, quality, and aesthetics. It was this combination of factors that allowed the architect to reach a new level: Nurlan Kamitov became the first architect in Kazakhstan to become an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Members of this organization include Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Nicholas Grimshaw, and Frank Lloyd Wright. To become an Honorary Fellow of RIBA, one must have a solid portfolio of completed projects and demonstrate a high level of design excellence. RIBA membership offers tremendous opportunities—not only a guarantee of quality, but also the opportunity to work internationally, something the newly minted RIBA member plans to do in the near future: participate in competitions and projects open only to a select group of architects. In summary, admission to RIBA membership represents a high recognition of one's work and proof of the level of Kazakhstani design, which is on par with recognized global standards.
